There's a real baby boom at Blijdorp Zoo! From tiny dwarf mongooses and Mhorr gazelles to playful fishing cat kittens and a brown-striped zebra, our youngest animals are ready to steal your heart. Come and meet them for yourself!
Three fishing cats have been born at Blijdorp Zoo. Mother Esmee is lovingly caring for her kittens. This birth is not only adorable news, but also an important milestone for the conservation of the species. In the wild, fishing cats face increasing pressure due to habitat loss and pollution. The arrival of these three kittens therefore makes a valuable contribution to the international population management programme.
Spotted hyena Kaidi recently became the mother of a hyena cub. Her son, Acazi, is growing well and is being seen more and more often by visitors. Curious and adventurous, he is exploring his surroundings and discovering every corner of the habitat. Thanks to DNA testing, we now know that Acazi is a male. With his playful personality, he has already won the hearts of many visitors.
Behind the scenes, a hatchling has emerged from its egg. This tiny newcomer belongs to the Egyptian tortoise, one of the smallest tortoise species in the world, and is no bigger than a paper clip. The birth is especially significant, as the Egyptian tortoise is a critically endangered species. Blijdorp Zoo coordinates the population management programme for this species and actively contributes to its conservation. The hatchling is not yet on display, but you can follow its first milestones on our social media channels!
A crested macaque infant has been born at Blijdorp Zoo. The mother is Dunya and the father is Louis. For Louis, this is his first offspring. The little one is now a few months old and is becoming increasingly independent. The young crested macaque regularly explores the habitat on its own and has even started sampling solid food. The crested macaque is one of the most endangered macaque species in the world. With this birth, we are contributing to the conservation of the species.
No fewer than nine Cape hyraxes have been born in the Crocodile River area. The young “dassies” are thriving and can often be seen among the rocks. Within a colony, females frequently synchronise their births and then work together to care for and protect the young. The number of baby hyraxes may even continue to grow. With a little patience, you might spot these curious youngsters as they explore the world around them.
After nearly twelve years, a zebra has been born at Blijdorp Zoo once again. The foal is a male and has been named Tumo. His mother is Eva and his father is Kitoko. Tumo's birth is especially important, as Chapman’s zebras face increasing pressure in the wild. Visitors can already see the young foal outdoors, where he regularly entertains onlookers with energetic bursts of playful running and jumping.
In early March, bongo Yuna welcomed a baby boy named Yuki. He has grown since then, but he is still a youngster with adorably oversized ears. You can already see him exploring the outdoor habitat. Yuki's birth is important for the reserve population, as bongos are sadly highly endangered in the wild.
