'Together, we bring nature back to life!'

Our planet faces serious problems, but we are determined to make a difference. At Rotterdam Zoo, we are not just a park showcasing wild animals; we are actively committed to their survival. We fight for biodiversity conservation, the restoration of ecosystems, and the promotion of sustainability. Together, we can create a better future for everyone.
A bold vision for 2050
By 2050, we want to have played a key role in saving ten endangered animal and plant species. It’s an ambitious goal, but with your support we believe it’s achievable.
In the more than 160 years Rotterdam Zoo has existed, the state of nature worldwide has rapidly declined. This is mainly due to the ever-growing world population, all needing more food and resources. As a result, habitats for many species have diminished, animals have been overhunted or overfished, and nature faces increasing consequences from climate change. That’s why Rotterdam Zoo is dedicated to conserving endangered species, restoring natural habitats, and inspiring people to help protect our unique world. In doing so, we hope to turn the tide and help nature flourish again.

It's a race against time to prevent more animal and plant species from becoming extinct.

Our Master Plan 2050 is guided by four key principles:
- Stop the Loss: Prevent further extinction of species and destruction of habitats.
- Reverse the Red: Restore populations of endangered species and ecosystems.
- Brighten the Blue: Restore and protect marine environments.
- Expand the Green: Increase nature areas and improve connectivity.
We have chosen ten species as ambassadors for our conservation efforts. Each animal represents a unique habitat and faces different threats. By focusing our efforts on these species, we can create a domino effect of positive change around the world.

Our ten ambassadors come from diverse habitats across the world, each with their own set of challenges. At Rotterdam Zoo, we call these 'impact areas', and we prioritise our efforts there to make the greatest difference for these species. This ensures we protect both the wildlife and their habitats.

Collaboration is key to our success. We work with zoos and organisations worldwide to maximise our impact.
