Zoos are important places for scientific research. Many types of studies, such as behavioural observations, are difficult to carry out in the wild because animals may quickly disappear from view. Knowledge about physiology, genetics, health and veterinary care is easier to collect in a controlled environment and with animals that are accustomed to contact with their caretakers.
The knowledge gained through research at Rotterdam Zoo is shared as widely as possible with conservation projects worldwide. The results of scientific research are published in scientific publications, ensuring that findings contribute to global knowledge and conservation efforts.

Support the Bonaire Hub
In the Caribbean, Rotterdam Zoo is actively involved in nature conservation through the Bonaire Hub, an innovative center that protects coral reefs and marine species. Through the Roffa Reefs project, we collaborate with local communities, fishermen, and international partners to promote the recovery and reproduction of reef fish.
