Green Key is an international certification for organisations in the leisure industry that go beyond legal requirements when it comes to environmental measures. The certification is awarded at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Rotterdam Zoo has received the highest distinction: Gold.

From 2025 onwards, the certification will be known in the Netherlands as Duurzaam Gastvrij. This certification continues to be supported by Green Key Nederland and the KMVK Foundation.
For many years, Rotterdam Zoo has been committed to sustainable operations. Caring for nature is inseparable from caring for the environment. When animal enclosures are built or renovated, careful attention is paid to insulation, the use of sustainable materials and smart technologies that help reduce energy consumption. The solar panels on the roof of the Oceanium and the sustainably designed Savannah House are good examples of this approach.
Many of the energy saving measures implemented behind the scenes over recent years are less visible. These include improvements in water use, lighting and heating. Numerous taps and light fixtures have been replaced, and sub meters have been installed to better monitor energy consumption.
In addition, the entire zoo is assessed across twelve key themes: management, communication, social engagement, water, cleaning, waste, energy, construction and green spaces, mobility, food and beverages, sustainable purchasing and textiles.
In the coming years, Rotterdam Zoo will continue to reduce its environmental impact. The Green Key certification supports this ambition, as its standards are tightened every three years. In the years ahead, Green Key Nederland will transition to Duurzaam Gastvrij. Rotterdam Zoo holds both certifications.
