Diergaarde Blijdorp places a high emphasis on sustainability. This theme is a significant pillar in our Master Plan 2023. Sustainability within the organization of Blijdorp is divided into waste, construction, energy, Green Key, and nutrition.
Sustainability is the use of resources in a way that ensures there will be enough for future generations. Blijdorp is committed to sustainability because it benefits nature. Since 2016, we have been rewarded with a Green Key Gold for our efforts. Curious about all the sustainable activities of Diergaarde Blijdorp?
Diergaarde Blijdorp has been working on sustainable business operations for many years. After all, caring for nature is inseparable from the environment. Therefore, we handle the waste we produce sustainably. We separate our waste behind the scenes in our environmental park and have our own composting machine. But as a visitor, you can also contribute by, for example, returning your cans or PET bottles.
When constructing new enclosures and buildings in Blijdorp, we pay close attention to sustainability. We not only consider the use of sustainable materials but also aim for overall sustainable construction. The giraffe enclosure serves as a great example of this approach.
At Blijdorp, we strive to use sustainable energy sources as much as possible. Many of our lighting fixtures have been replaced with LED lighting, and we generate our own energy through sources like the solar panels on the Oceanium's roof. Additionally, we heat the Crocodile River using a wood chip stove.
Diergaarde Blijdorp holds the Green Key Gold certification. The Green Key is an international eco-label for businesses in the leisure sector that go above and beyond to minimize their environmental impact. This certification comes in Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, and Blijdorp has achieved the highest recognition: Gold. This signifies that we are committed to environmental conservation efforts beyond what is legally required.
In Blijdorp, we strive to offer sustainable food options. This applies not only to the animals' diet but also to the offerings for visitors at our food establishments. Additionally, we consider the packaging materials we use.
