Discover the wonders of the underwater world and learn about our efforts to save the underwater treasures.

The underwater world is beautiful. It is home to various fish, sea turtles, and corals. However, these treasures are heavily affected by various dangers. Fortunately, there is hope; every day, steps are being taken to save our precious underwater world. Discover what we and our partners are doing to turn the tide and save the underwater treasures. Support us by donating to our projects. Your contribution directly supports the numerous projects carried out by Diergaarde Blijdorp. Together we bring nature back to life.

In the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea, Diergaarde Blijdorp is committed to protecting the coral reefs and all their inhabitants. What started as an experiment in the Oceanium has evolved into the Caribbean Hub on Bonaire: a central point to save all treasures in this area, both above and below water.

Coral reefs are habitats with high biodiversity. They are the nurseries of the ocean and an important habitat for a quarter of all fish worldwide. These marine fish, in turn, play a crucial role in maintaining the coral reef. The small herbivorous fish are the gardeners of the reef; they keep the corals free from overgrowth by algae. To protect coral reefs, it is important to maintain a healthy fish population.

In addition to the value that coral brings to the underwater world, it also provides protection above water. Coral reefs dampen waves. This is very important because if the coral reef does not break the waves, floods can occur. This shows that all ecosystems are interconnected. By protecting the underwater world, we also help protect the above-water world.

RoffaReefs is part of the Caribbean Hub, focusing on researching the reproduction of marine fish. We still know too little about these fish to protect them properly. Therefore, research is essential. Using a self-designed breeding system, tested first in the Oceanium, we investigate which species reproduce when.

But of course, we can’t do this alone! Together with local fishermen and conservation organizations, we work to map and maintain the fish population. The so-called fish calendar.

Every form of support is invaluable. Your contribution directly contributes to the numerous projects of Diergaarde Blijdorp. Let's make a difference together!

This Pentecost weekend (Saturday 18th to Monday 20th of May), Blijdorp will be buzzing. During the Conservation Festival, the zoo will focus on species conservation and nature restoration. Be inspired by various activities such as Blijdorp (Kids) Colleges, keeper talks, and behind-the-scenes glimpses. At the Conservation Market, you'll discover what we do and how our partners contribute to this. You'll also find out what you can do yourself.
